When pigmentation affects the skin it usually presents itself as small patches of discolouration. The most common type of pigmentation is the development of age spots, also known as sun spots, which are an example of hyperpigmentation – when the skin goes darker in tone. This is a concern that’s often associated with age as it more commonly affects older adults. The reason for this is due to the time it takes for hyperpigmentation to occur, often taking many years to become visible.

Age spots, and other types of hyperpigmentation (e.g. melasma) are the result of an overproduction of melanin that accumulates within the skin’s cells. Melanin is a pigment that gives the skin its natural tone, which can be increased when exposed to UV rays in an attempt to protect the deeper layers of the skin. This is often seen when the skin tans, but also as a small round dark patch when pigmented cells build up to a point where they’re visible through the top layers of the skin.

Melasma often affects the face and is also due to excess melanin, and may also be caused by sun exposure. However, this concern can also appear during pregnancy or from certain medical conditions or medication, as hormone levels fluctuate.

Other types of hyperpigmentation can include freckles, birthmarks, macular stains, port wine stains and hemangiomas.

Caring for your skin is a great way to maintain the condition of the skin, and a daily skincare routine is advised. Using suitable products will keep the skin clear, glowing and even in tone, and our medical grade skincare ZO Skin Health can also target specific concerns, including pigmentation. The best way to prevent pigmentation issues, such as age spots, from developing is to protect the skin from the effects of UV rays by applying a high factor SPF everyday.

Daleswood Aesthetics would also recommend the multi-award winning and globally recognised Dermalux Systems to rejuvenate the skin, reverse the signs of ageing and improves acne and other skin conditions including pigmentation, rosecea and psoriasis.

The Dermalux Flex MD is the world’s most powerful at-home LED device for use on the face and body. We also offer an in-clinic treatment with the Dermalux Compact, which 4 times more powerful than the Demalux Flex MD.

Pigmentation & Skin Concerns -
